OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - An Omaha couple has donated $1 million to create an endowed professorship at the University of Nebraska Medical Center focused on public health.

The Medical Center announced the gift from longtime supports Ruth and Bill Scott this week.

The new professorship will be named in honor of former UNMC Chancellor Harold Maurer.

Current UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey Gold says endowed professorships help make it possible to hire top experts.

Ruth Scott says she and her husband hope this gift will help UNMC build upon the work done to respond to the Ebola crisis.

UNMC and its sister hospital, the Nebraska Medical Center, treated several patients with Ebola in the past year.
