LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan’s Senate leadership has requested a hearing on the recent appointment of a former utility executive as state treasurer.

Senate Democratic Minority Leader Jim Ananich announced Thursday that Senate Republican Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof has requested an advice and consent hearing on Gov. Rick Snyder’s appointment of Nick Khouri as state treasurer.

Khouri was senior vice president for corporate affairs at DTE Energy in Detroit. The Republican governor announced the appointment March 17, and it took effect April 20.

Ananich says the hearing is great for transparency and the Senate should have such hearings regularly.

The Michigan Constitution lets the Senate hold hearings up to 60 session days after an appointment is made. An appointment can be disapproved by a majority of the Senate in that time frame.
