EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Before being handed a sentence of more than seven years in prison, an Army veteran apologized in court to the 19-year-old nursing student who nearly died when he crashed into her car.
The Eugene Register-Guard reports (https://bit.ly/1ElRmw1 ) that 32-year-old Joseph Lee Umphrey wrote an apology letter to the girl after crashing his stolen Toyota Prius in February and sending her to a hospital’s intensive care unit for four days.
Ashley Clark of Elmira clutched the letter when she entered Lane County Circuit Court for Umphrey’s sentencing hearing on Wednesday. Supporting herself with a crutch, she thanked him through tears for sending the letter.
Umphrey was charged possession of methamphetamine and driving under the influence of drugs after he crashed into two cars, including one driven by Clark.
