COLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) - The Columbus Public Library board hopes to raise more than $7 million by allowing people to name large spaces inside a proposed downtown library and cultural arts center.
Suggested donations for naming rights on 23 rooms range from $100,000 to $750,000, the Columbus Telegram (https://bit.ly/1GrMRGu ) reported. The sections include the children’s library, computer library art gallery, auditorium and meeting room. Naming the entire library comes with the price tag of $1 million.
The sale of naming rights is expected to raise around 43 percent of the estimated $17.5 million needed to complete the project. Businesses and individuals can purchase a space in their name or use it as a memorial to honor someone else.
“Some of the items and spaces might not get sold, we don’t know, but this is the starting point,” said Library Director Drew Brookhart.
Guidelines state the board has the sole authority to determine if someone’s name stays in the event the room or area is significantly altered.
The board also is considering letting people name smaller spaces and objects like statues and service desks at smaller donation levels.
