CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago’s airports are expecting an increase in the number of Memorial Day weekend travelers this year.

The city’s department of aviation says more than 1.6 million people will pass through O’Hare and Midway international airports between Thursday and next Tuesday.

Midway will see the biggest jump over the previous year’s figures, at about 5 percent. The increase at O’Hare will be about 1 ½ percent for the six-day period.

Deputy Aviation Commissioner Michael Boland says the increase is “a positive sign” for the aviation industry and the region’s economy.

The busiest day at both airports is expected to be Friday, with more than 242,000 passengers at O’Hare and about 73,000 at Midway.
