PHOENIX (AP) - Cable provider Comcast plans to open a new customer support center in Tucson and hire more than 1,100 workers to staff the facility.

Thursday’s announcement at the Capitol drew praise from Gov. Doug Ducey, who called it “the latest validation that we’re open and ready for business.”

Comcast says the combined payroll and benefits for the 1,125-worker facility will be about $35 million a year. That means the call center jobs average about $15 an hour including the cost of benefits.

Call center workers will help customers with billing and repair questions and other issues, and the company’s new Spanish-speaking social media team will be based at the planned 100,000 square foot facility.

Comcast spokesman Ray Child says the company will use an existing building after it is renovated.
