HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - A Hilton Head Island couple is accused of cashing over $19,000 worth of forged checks from an elderly man they were caring for.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head (https://bit.ly/1HuT7fl) reports Tamicha McKinnon and Kenneth Mitchell were employed as caregivers for an 80-year-old Hilton Head Island man. Beaufort County sheriff’s Capt. Bob Bromage says they forged 22 checks from October to January. A family member discovered the checks after looking at the man’s account activity and contacted authorities.

Police charged McKinnon with three counts of financial transaction fraud, forgery and exploitation of a vulnerable adult. Mitchell was charged with forgery and one count of financial transaction fraud. Both were arrested Tuesday night and are being held at the Beaufort County jail.

It is unclear if McKinnon or Mitchell has a lawyer.
