DETROIT (AP) - Detroit’s police chief is getting a 2-year contract extension.
Mayor Mike Duggan says Thursday he’s pleased with the work of Chief James Craig, who took the post in May 2013 and will stay until at least mid-2017.
Craig, whose salary is $225,000, thanked prosecutors and other law enforcement agencies for cooperation on efforts to improve public safety. He says the community is “resilient” and “engaged.”
The department reported in January that overall crime, including homicides, dropped last year in Detroit. The department’s end-of-year statistics showed that the 300 criminal homicides were the lowest in Detroit since 281 were committed in 1967.
So far this year, homicides are up. The Detroit Free Press reports that, as of May 10, Detroit had 101 homicides versus 81 during the same period in 2014.
