PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A hearing is underway in Rhode Island to figure out if the state’s proposed pension settlement is fair.

The hearing began Wednesday in Superior Court and is expected to last two to four more days.

The General Assembly passed $4 billion in cuts to employee retirements in 2011. Union members sued the state in 2012 arguing the law was an unconstitutional breach of contract, but agreed to settle in March.

The settlement would preserve 90 percent of the savings from the pension overhaul if approved by Judge Sarah Taft-Carter and the General Assembly.

Taft-Carter initially approved the settlement last month and is expected to do so again.

Nearly 70 current state employees and retirees are expected to ask her to reject the deal.
