ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - The National Museum of the Great Lakes has renewed its collaboration with a team of western New York-based shipwreck explorers that has found numerous wrecks in Lake Ontario.
Christopher Gillcrist, executive director of the museum in Toledo, Ohio, says the museum will continue to underwrite Jim Kennard’s fuel expenses for the 2015 exploration season in exchange for his knowledge, expertise and time.
Kennard, from the Rochester area, is part of a five-member team that hunts for wrecks in Lake Ontario. During five years of being sponsored by the Great Lakes museum, the team has discovered the wrecks of schooners and steamer ships, as well as that of a U.S. Air Force plane that crashed in 1952.
Information from one of the team’s discoveries is used for one of the museum’s new interactive exhibits.
