BOSTON (AP) - A Superior Court judge has ruled that random searches by transit police of commercial buses arriving in Boston from New York violate the constitutional rights of passengers.

The Boston Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1Lh1KL7 ) the recent ruling came in the case of Gregory Luperon, a Framingham man arrested after police found more than 1,200 oxycodone pills hidden in a bathroom on a bus arriving at South Station last July.

Judge Charles Hely said the arrest was unlawful because police didn’t have reason to suspect a crime before boarding the bus.

Luperon’s attorney called the decision a “victory for freedom.”

Transit police spokesman Lt. Richard Sullivan says searches by police have netted about $1 million in illicit drugs over the past two years.

Authorities have stopped the searches while they review the ruling.
