NEW YORK (AP) - New York City advocates say senior housing should be built on land that now holds underused parking lots.
The group LiveOn NY says its proposal could result in at least 2,000 units of affordable housing for low-income seniors.
According to The Wall Street Journal (https://on.wsj.com/1ElmZWK ), the group has pinpointed 39 lots near subways that could be developed.
They’re all owned by nonprofit affordable-housing providers and financed by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The city’s Department of Planning has found that only 5 percent of the seniors who live in those types of buildings own cars. The department has proposed zoning changes to develop the lots.
An estimated 17 percent of the city’s population - 1.4 million people - are age 60 and over.
