WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) - Westchester County has settled a lawsuit from the federal government that said improper treatment of drinking water had created a health risk for some residents.
The county has to make capital improvements that will cost about $10 million, pay a penalty of $1.1 million and undertake environmental projects worth about $700,000. That’s according to a consent decree made public Thursday.
A county spokesman said the federal government had originally proposed a remedy that would have cost $95 million more.
The government had alleged that water in a district serving Scarsdale, White Plains, Mount Vernon, and Yonkers missed a 2012 deadline for proper treatment of a parasite that can endanger children, pregnant women and the elderly.
The county spokesman said the water was never found to be unsafe.
