MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) - Some former students and others have taken home solid reminders of a northern Iowa school that stood for 91 years.

Some of the people seeking mementos waited in line outside the Mason City district bus barn on Wednesday afternoon before each took just two of about 100 bricks recovered from the demolition of Madison Elementary School. The main portion of the building was built in 1923.

Dale Foster, of Mason City, told the Mason City Globe Gazette that he had fond memories of the school, especially “the good times we had out on the playground.”

Roger Ames, who lived across a street from the school for 45 years, said it “was kind of sad to see it go, but that’s progress, I guess.”
