PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A motorcyclist is dead after he crashed into a tree and the bike caught fire in Portland.

Police say 38-year-old Biddeford resident John Fontaine lost control of his motorcycle Thursday morning. Police say he crossed the center line and hit a tree. The bike then burst into flames.

Moments before the crash, an officer says he saw a motorcyclist speeding. The officer tried to stop the bike, but lost sight of it and shut off his lights and siren. He then saw other motorcyclists stopped at an intersection. They alerted the officer to the crash.

Police say Fontaine was the only person on the bike. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
