PENNSAUKEN, N.J. (AP) - Residents and police officers in southern New Jersey are opposing a proposal for a county-run police force to replace the township department.
Pennsauken residents, including police officers and family members, spoke against the proposal Wednesday at a township meeting.
The department received a report Monday criticizing the department’s effectiveness and advising the township to switch to the Camden County-run police force that now only operates in the city of Camden.
The report suggests the switch could save the township more than $30 million over the next six years.
Pennsauken Police Chief John Coffey says the report was wrong on many of its assessments.
President Barack Obama praised the Camden County Police Department this week for community policing.
Pennsauken Mayor Rick Taylor says the decision to form a new police department will not be put to a public vote.
