CANTON, Miss. (AP) - Norman Cannady will be the next tax assessor in Madison County following an opponent’s withdrawal from the August primary.

The Madison County Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1FsRcqW ) reports that Republican candidate John Evans submitted a letter to Circuit Clerk Lee Westbrook asking he be taken off the ballot.

Westbrook is forwarding the letter to the Madison County Republican Party, which oversees the Aug. 4 Republican primary.

There is no Democrat running for the office.

Cannady, currently chief appraiser for retiring Tax Assessor Gerald Barber, has worked for the county for 12 years.
