HAMPTON, N.H. (AP) - Coastal New Hampshire residents are up in arms over a proposal that would force homeowners who have constructed personal seawalls to lease the public land on which the walls are located.
The Portsmouth Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1AooSql ) a public hearing was held Monday for Hampton residents impacted by the idea, which came from meetings held in 2013 and 2014 by selectmen to amend seawall regulations.
Residents say their families have maintained personal seawalls to protect their homes from stormy weather and dangerous waves. The professionally constructed walls are usually made of large rocks and boulders.
While the seawalls are built on parts of the beach owned by the town, residents say there has been an unspoken understanding that the homeowners should maintain the walls themselves.
