SUMMERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is considering whether to approve a permit for a proposed injection well in Monroe County.

The Monroe News reports (https://bit.ly/1KoDs4E ) about 200 people gathered this week for a public hearing on Trendwell Energy Corp.’s plan to dig a 765- foot well in Summerfield Township and inject saltwater brine, a naturally occurring byproduct found when drilling for oil.

Some residents are worried that the disposal well could leak and contaminants could spread throughout the area, affecting drinking water. John Chandler, township supervisor, noted that local officials enacted a ban on waste disposal in the township in March.

Plans detailed in the draft permit call for safeguards to protect the environment. The EPA could approve the permit, approve it with modifications or deny it.
