WEST MELBOURNE, Fla. (AP) - A former West Melbourne police chief has been awarded a $350,000 settlement after being fired three years ago.

Brian Lock’s case was settled Tuesday in Orlando.

But City Attorney Jim Wilson says West Melbourne leaders disagree with their insurer’s choice to settle the case.

Lock was fired after the West Melbourne City Council determined he acted improperly by allowing a former police commander to retire on a medical disability rather than face arrest or discipline for stealing pills being held in an evidence locker.

The next week, he sued in federal court.

Florida Today (https://on.flatoday.com/1PArCrO ) reports Councilman John Tice called the settlement “deplorable.” Tice says city officials believed they had a strong case and were misled “up until the decision was made Tuesday morning.”
