SUFFOLK, Va. (AP) - A former Suffolk firefighter of the year will serve a year behind bars for stealing more than $109,000 from the firefighters union.
The Virginian-Pilot (https://bit.ly/1ISRZDD ) reports 42-year-old Sheron Gibson was sentenced Thursday to eight years in prison, with seven of those suspended.
In March, the former union treasurer pleaded guilty to one felony count each of embezzlement and forgery.
Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Vaughn Breedlove says Gibson stole money from the Local 2801 of the International Association of Firefighters union during January 2008 and February 2014, using some of it to pay personal bills and those for his business, Virginia Fire Extinguishers.
Breedlove also says Gibson falsified an audit.
Court records show Gibson has repaid the union.
Gibson worked for the fire department from 2003 until June 2014.
