ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) - A family of barn owls has evidently decided to upgrade from their 41-foot-tall, nutcracker-shaped home in an Oregon park.

The Roseburg News-Review reports (https://bit.ly/1Q1JaIf ) that the owls have abandoned the massive wooden nutcracker in River Forks County Park about a month after workers found them nesting in a hole in its back.

The 18,000-pound sculpture was put up to celebrate a November Festival of the Lights, and its removal was delayed by the owls because they are a federally protected species.

On Thursday, crews were finally able to begin the $800, multi-step process of removing the enormous nutcracker.

The entire nutcracker will be cleaned and stained before returning to the park in October. Its torso will receive an additional motor to power its arms and coconut-crushing mouth.
