PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - One man has been indicted and another has been cleared of wrongdoing in the 2013 killing of a 78-year-old grandfather in Providence.

The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1KpSZRZ ) that a grand jury on Friday indicted 34-year-old Leopoldo Belen on charges including first-degree murder in the beating death of Delor “Dean” Cabral inside his apartment house.

Prosecutors have dropped charges against another man, 41-year-old Wilbert Richardson, who was accused in the killing. Another co-defendant, 27-year-old Joel Valdez, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and is facing up to life in prison.

Authorities said Valdez and Belen broke into the apartment house in search of drugs and money and assaulted a tenant. Prosecutors say Cabral was fatally beaten when he tried to help the tenant, who had identified Richardson as one of the suspects.
