DETROIT (AP) - A Michigan state senator accused of shooting at his ex-wife’s car during a dispute at his Detroit home is due back in court next month for a key hearing.
Virgil Smith, a Democrat who has served in the Legislature since 2003, appeared in court Friday for a scheduling conference. A judge set a preliminary hearing for June 12 to determine if the case goes to trial.
Smith didn’t comment to reporters after the hearing.
The 35-year-old is the son of longtime state lawmaker and Wayne County judge Virgil Smith Jr. The senator faces charges including felonious assault, domestic violence and malicious destruction of personal property.
No one was inside the car and no one was injured.
