FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Two African elephants from an Arkansas sanctuary will soon be on exhibit at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo.
The Fresno Bee reports (https://bit.ly/1R9F1nV) the move is part of an effort to create an exhibit and breeding herd for the elephants, which are frequently targeted by poachers in sub-Saharan Africa and threatened by a loss of habitat.
An African Adventure exhibit opening in October will include 27-year-old Amy and 7-year-old Mrs. Betts. The elephants join two cheetahs and four wildebeest that will be featured in the exhibit as well.
The first African elephants to come to the zoo, general curator Dan Subaitis said the goal is to get Amy and Mrs. Betts through the lengthy quarantine and observation process so they can move in before the weather gets too hot.
