MOUNT VERNON, Wash. (AP) - Officials say a dramatic fire in downtown Mount Vernon, Washington, has damaged a building that houses three businesses.

Residents of a nearby apartment building were briefly evacuated as a precaution Thursday night.

No one was injured.

The Skagit Valley Herald reports (https://is.gd/c5pQSH) that city spokesman Kenny Bergsma said the fire started at the Taste of India restaurant, which was believed to have suffered most of the damage. The restaurant shares the building with a bail bond office and another restaurant.

Firefighters from a half-dozen departments responded. They initially entered the building to fight the fire, but later withdrew because of structural concerns and fears the roof might collapse.

Thick black smoke could be seen for miles.

The cause of the blaze was not immediately known.
