CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - The New Hampshire Supreme Court ruled that grandparents do not lose visitation rights to their grandchildren even if the child’s parents die and they are adopted.
The Telegraph reports (https://bit.ly/1LrH181 ) this month’s ruling concerned a case that began in Nashua family court.
This is the latest step in the legal status of grandparents under state family law, following a 2005 law on grandparents’ visitation rights and a similar 2009 state Supreme Court ruling.
The status of grandparents’ access to their grandchildren has become increasingly legislated throughout the country as divorce, single parenting and other marital practice changes have become more prevalent.
Family law attorney Kysa Crusco says the state’s intention is to ensure the best interest of children “isn’t going to be cut off because of a family dispute.”
