WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) - There is a new date set for the first-degree murder trial of a northeastern Illinois man accused of shooting his girlfriend in the face at a bar as her 9-year-old daughter looked on.

The Lake County News-Sun (https://trib.in/1dnyGal) reports the trial of 23-year-old Roberto Romero is now scheduled for July 13. The Waukegan man’s trial had been set for May 4. But the parties said they needed more time. The new date was set at a hearing this week.

Prosecutors say Romero shot Elpidia Munoz-Garcia several times on Jan. 2 as his parents arrived to retrieve a gun he’d taken from their home. Romero and Munoz-Garcia had apparently been arguing.

Romero is charged with three counts of first-degree murder. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison. He remains jailed awaiting trial.
