DETROIT (AP) - A nonprofit organization working to preserve and share Detroit’s musical history says it has acquired artifacts from the former Graystone International Jazz Museum.
The Detroit Sound Conservancy says it’s inventorying and preserving the collection from the now-closed museum. Artifacts include posters, records, instruments and materials from the famed Graystone Ballroom - itself razed in 1980.
The conservancy has teamed up with the Detroit Historical Society on the project that also includes creating an online database. A larger goal is to develop a Detroit Sound Conservancy archive and museum.
An exhibit featuring items and images from the jazz museum will be featured Friday at the Detroit Public Library. It coincides with the Michigan Sound Conference.
Musical greats from Duke Ellington to Motown artists graced the Graystone stage.
