OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - A 500 gallon water tanker has been stolen from a landscaping site in the Oakland hills.

The Oakland Tribune reports (https://bayareane.ws/1Kp6FN2 ) that the half-full Marksman tanker-trailer belonging to Marina Landscape disappeared overnight and was missing when workers arrived early Thursday morning.

A Marksman representative said the tankers cost between $4,500 and $4,900.

Oakland police can’t remember a similar theft of a water tanker. They believe someone hooked the tanker up to a truck or other vehicle and drove onto the freeway.

Authorities speculate that a farmland, garden or similar business might have benefited from the theft.

Under a new law taking effect May 29, the fine for stealing water from the Oakland utility is $1,000 for the first offense and $2,000 the second time.
