URBANDALE, Iowa (AP) - Officials have ruled the deaths of a former Des Moines police officer and his ex-girlfriend a murder-suicide.
Death certificates show Polk County Medical Examiner Gregory Schmunk determined Mersed Dautovic assaulted and strangled Mevlida Dzananovic with some type of binding material before Dautovic killed himself. Their bodies were found April 19 in a garage behind an apartment complex in Urbandale where Dautovic lived.
Police say Dautovic had a history of domestic violence against Dzananovic.
The Des Moines Register reports (https://dmreg.co/1Q1zrS6 ) that prior to his death, Dautovic was facing additional sentencing on an excessive force conviction. He and his former partner on the force were accused of beating a man during a September 2008 traffic stop.
