PACOLET, S.C. (AP) - Elaine Harris, the mayor of Pacolet since 2001, has died after a long battle with cancer. She was 68.

Local businessman John Montgomery said Harris died Thursday night. Montgomery said she was an asset to the community and would be missed.

Friend and former councilwoman Linda Chadwick said Friday that Harris did so much for Pacolet and had a vision for it. She said Harris truly loved the town and is irreplaceable.

Harris, who like Chadwick was born and raised in the town, had served as Pacolet’s mayor since 2001 and was instrumental in revitalization efforts for the community. She was first elected to Pacolet Town Council in 1997.

Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
