PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence firefighters are pushing back against the city’s mayor over proposed changes in department costs.

Mayor Jorge Elorza says he can save $5 million a year for the city by shifting the way firefighters are deployed. Elorza proposes instituting a three platoon system for firefighters instead of the current four.

This change would mean more firefighters on the job every shift and less overtime needed to replace workers who are sick or on vacation.

Firefighters say Elorza’s proposal will not save the money promised by the mayor.

Union President Paul Doughty says the change could actually end up costing the city even more money.

The union also intends to challenge Elorza’s right to add hours to their workweek without adding extra pay. They are pursuing all legal options.
