FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (AP) - A $30 million beach renourshment effort at Folly Beach Park piled more sand on the shore.

It also piled rocks on the beach.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (https://bit.ly/1cRAo2L ) that the Army Corps of Engineers has had a company operate a rock-picking machine at the park. Mayor Tim Goodwin says the machine digs sand and shifts out rocks.

Officials say they conducted sample borings in the ocean before they began pumping the material on the beach. Corps spokesman Glenn Jeffries says it turned out the sand was not as clean as it appeared in the sampling.

Officials say more extensive sampling would have added millions of dollars in cost to the project.

The corps says the “cemented material” may wear down over time and disappear.
