CHARLEVOIX, Mich. (AP) - A prosecutor has authorized charging a man who authorities say stole guns during a break-in and used one to shoot a sheriff’s deputy in northern Michigan.
Charlevoix (SHAHR’-le-voy) County Prosecuting Attorney Allen Telgenhof said Thursday that the 53-year-old man is being charged with first-degree home invasion. An affidavit says he broke into a relative’s home and stole $2,200 and three guns.
Authorities believe the suspect used two of the guns in a standoff with police Saturday in Boyne Valley Township, wounding Cpl. Fred Hasty. Police say officers returned fire and wounded the suspect, and that both men were recovering at a hospital Thursday.
The Petoskey News-Review (https://bit.ly/1LrqzEM ) reports the suspect hasn’t been charged in connection with the shooting. Telgenhof says that part of the case is still being investigated, but he says more charges are “highly likely.”
