MARKS, Miss. (AP) - Railroad and Mississippi officials say Amtrak will establish a permanent stop in Marks in the heart of the Delta.
U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., says in a news release Friday that the decision was reached after talks among Amtrak, the Canadian National Railway and local and state officials. No opening date for the stop has been announced.
Wicker says rail service in the Mississippi Delta will boost economic development and tourism opportunities. He says it also will provide an alternative means of transportation for thousands of people.
The region has been without a convenient passenger rail stop for 20 years. An Amtrak stop in Batesville was closed in August of 1995.
