GILLETTE, Wyo. (AP) - A woman who was fatally shot by Campbell County Sheriff’s deputies has been identified as 39-year-old Nikki Jo Burtsfield, of Gillette.

The Gillette News Record reports (https://bit.ly/1ITDVKk ) that authorities say Burtsfield was killed after she brandished a knife at deputies Wednesday night and refused commands to drop it.

The shooting occurred on a rural road just east of Gillette after the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office received a call about someone trespassing at a coal mine.

It happened after a vehicle led deputies on a chase that ended when spike strips deflated its tires.

Authorities say deputies attempted to subdue Burtsfield with a stun gun, but it didn’t stop her.

The incident remains under investigation.
