TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - An Alabama military veteran surprised her son by meeting him on stage during his graduation ceremony in Tuscaloosa.

Al.com reports (https://bit.ly/1PDKDcN ) Petty Officer Second Class Vera Turner arrived early Saturday after a nine month deployment to Guantanamo Bay to surprise her son, Steven, a Bryant High School graduate.

Turner said school officials helped sneak her into Coleman Coliseum and arranged for her son’s name to be called last so their reunion didn’t interrupt the other graduates. The reunion was the first time Turner saw her family since she was deployed.

The school’s principal Linda Harper said 97 percent of the school’s graduating class are planning on pursuing college degrees, military service or professional development.
