BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Attorney General Wayne Stenhjem is warning citizens about scam artists who are calling North Dakotans and claiming to be from his office.

Stenehjem says citizens should watch out for calls from people who say they’re from his office and are demanding that people cooperate with a supposed IRS enforcement agent or are asking for money.

He says one individual reported receiving a call from someone claiming to be from his office who was threatening enforcement action. The man says he became concerned when he realized later that the number displayed on his caller ID was actually the number for Stenehjem’s office.

Stenehjem says his office doesn’t make threatening phone calls on behalf of the IRS and says if somebody receives a similar call, they should hang up right away.
