NEW YORK (AP) - A historic Brooklyn cemetery has unveiled a searchable database of thousands of Civil War soldiers, abolitionists, former slaves and others buried there.

The online biographies are part of a Memorial Day exhibit that opened Saturday at Green-Wood Cemetery.

More than half a million people are interred at the landmark cemetery that dates to 1838. Almost 5,000 were in some way involved in the Civil War.

In about the past dozen years, volunteers matched gravestones of these war-era dead with their individual stories by searching newspaper archives, military records and other documents.

Green-Wood President Richard Moylan says these Civil War dead who sacrificed so much deserve to be remembered.

The research will continue.
