MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - A longtime fixture at the Vermont Statehouse won’t be on the scene when lawmakers return in January.

House Clerk Don Milne announced on the last day of the legislative session that he’ll step down effective Oct. 31. The Washington resident has held the job since 1993. He will be replaced by the current first assistant clerk, Bill MaGill of Montpelier.

Milne will turn 81 in July. He first arrived at the Statehouse in 1961 as second assistant clerk. He later served as a representative from the Washington district and then in the Senate secretary’s office before moving to the House clerk’s job.

Milne’s wife, former state Rep. Marion Milne, died last year. His son Scott ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2014.
