LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (AP) - Flash flood watches are in effect for portions of northwest and central Arkansas.

The National Weather Service says the watches extend through the long Memorial Day weekend. Forecasters say unsettled weather conditions will continue through the holiday weekend as a developing storm system moves slowly toward the region.

Several rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected during the watch period. Scattered showers and thunderstorms Saturday will become more numerous over the weekend. Heavy rainfall is forecast for Sunday and Sunday night.

Rainfall amounts of up to 3 inches will be common through Monday morning, with locally higher amounts approaching 5 inches. The heaviest rainfall across west central and northwest Arkansas is expected Sunday and Sunday night and may lead to flash flooding due to recent heavy rains and saturated soil.
