PENSACOLA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A Florida Panhandle couple was finishing a monthlong tour of Nepal and Tibet when a massive earthquake disrupted their travels.

Jan and Steven Kurtz of Pensacola Beach say they were standing in a small village on Nepal’s border with Tibet on April 25 when they heard a rumble.

Jan Kurtz tells the Pensacola News Journal (https://on.pnj.com/1Akk7OU ) that after the quake stopped, boulders and rocks continued falling down the mountains, smashing into tour buses and buildings and crushing people around them.

The couple said their tour operator led their group along buckled roads to a refugee camp, where they stayed for several days before helicopters ferried them to Kathmandu. They flew home as scheduled May 7.

Two earthquakes April 25 and May 12 killed 8,635 people in Nepal.
