SANDUSKY, Ohio (AP) - Backers who want to build a youth sports complex near Cedar Point amusement park are asking Ohio lawmakers to let them increase a countywide hotel tax

Erie County leaders say increasing the hotel tax by 1 percent would raise $17 million and pay for much of the youth sports complex.

Supporters say construction could start this fall on the complex that would include 10 athletic fields for traveling youth sports teams.

The Sandusky Register ( ) reports that the center would be built on a former airfield site along Lake Erie in Sandusky.

The owners of Cedar Point amusement park are contributing $3.5 million to buy the airport site and for the project.

Tourism officials say the sports complex will bring more people to the area’s hotels and attractions.
