COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) - A Council Bluffs man is behind bars after police say he stole a forklift and tried to ram a police cruiser with it during a low-speed chase.

Police tell the Daily Nonpareil reports (https://bit.ly/1AqDy8s ) that 39-year-old Michael Burgess was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run crash Friday in Council Bluffs while driving the forklift.

Police say Burgess later tried to ram a police cruiser twice as an officer tried to stop him. He was soon surrounded and arrested.

Police say the forklift had been stolen from a lumberyard.

Burgess is being held on suspicion of first-degree theft, assault on a police officer with a dangerous weapon and leaving the scene of an accident. He remained in the Pottawattamie County Jail on Saturday and could not be reached for comment.
