NILES, Mich. (AP) - An American Legion post in southwestern Michigan is struggling to pay rent after spending money to bring a traveling version of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to Niles last year.
Members of the Larue Messenger American Legion post have been meeting in a former Elks hall in Niles since selling its longtime home a few years ago. Post Commander John Sly tells the South Bend Tribune (https://bit.ly/1HCnfFC ) that he’s looking at ways to raise money to pay rent.
Sly says the post has roughly 250 members but only a dozen attend meetings each month. He says much of the money from the sale of the building was used to bring the Vietnam wall to the area.
Sly says the Legion still will help veterans “no matter what happens.”
