CHICAGO (AP) - A man set to be deported after pleading guilty to burglary has instead been temporarily released by immigration authorities in northern Illinois so he can donate a kidney to his sister.

Twenty-seven-year-old Argenis Longoria-Lara was in custody for felony burglary and awaiting deportation to Mexico.

WLS-TV reports (https://abc7.ws/1Rd3SY8 ) that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement granted him a six-month reprieve and released him Thursday on electronic monitoring.

He reunited with his sister, Jazmin Longoria-Lara, at the family’s Chicago church. The Chicago woman was in tears when she hugged her brother.

She has a rare disease that affects her kidneys and requires dialysis. A transplant could save her from kidney failure.

The siblings will undergo further tests to prepare for the transplant.
