BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) - The Mexican government has announced plans to release excess water from reservoirs in the state of Nuevo Leon into the lower Rio Grande, actions expected to raise water levels in the border river.
Mexico has told the U.S. Section of the International Boundary and Water Commission that it needs to lower water levels in two reservoirs on the San Juan River to prepare for flood season, which begins June 1.
Commission spokeswoman Sally Spener tells The Brownsville Herald (https://bit.ly/1AlZh1L) that the releases from the El Cuchillo and Marte R. Gomez reservoirs are expected to last into July.
The San Juan River joins the Rio Grande across from Rio Grande City.
