NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - Police in Newport News say they used a Taser to subdue a man accused of stealing a truck and trying to choke an officer.

Media outlets report 28-year-old Orestes Thomas Guerra was charged Friday with assault and battery of a law enforcement officer, strangulation, resisting arrested and possession of stolen property.

Police say in a statement that officers responding to a report of a stolen box truck found the vehicle with a man inside.

The statement says the suspect refused an officer’s request to leave the truck. When the officer tried to pull him out of the car, the suspect grabbed and squeezed the officer’s throat and pushed him against the truck.

The suspect was hit with a Taser and handcuffed.

The suspect and officer were evaluated at the scene.
