MIAMI (AP) - Haitian-American author Edwidge Danticat says a book fair in Miami’s Little Haiti helps the community hold onto its culture as the neighborhood becomes gentrified.

The third Haitian Caribbean Book Fair will close streets near the Little Haiti Cultural Complex on Sunday for vendors, authors and musicians. The daylong festival includes workshops, Caribbean food and puppet shows.

Danticat and founder Jan Mapou tell The Miami Herald (https://hrld.us/1FmH0RK ) that the fair is crucial for Haitian and Caribbean artists trying to make their mark in Miami, especially when it’s becoming harder to showcase their culture in a neighborhood that has started shifting away from its identity as an immigrant enclave.

The fair opened Saturday evening with a reception honoring Danticat, whose most recent book is “Claire of the Sea Light,” among other writers.
